Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico Reports 5.1% Passenger Traffic Decrease in June 2026

A mixed bag for GAP’s 14 airports: new routes signal expansion, but overall passenger numbers are still falling short of 2025 levels

Guadalajara, Mexico, July 6, 2026 — The post-pandemic tourism boom that swept across Mexico and the Caribbean, filling resorts and airport terminals, appears to be hitting some turbulence.

Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico (NYSE: PAC; BMV: GAP), the operator of 12 Mexican and two Jamaican airports, just released its preliminary passenger traffic figures for June 2026.

The headline numbers aren’t pretty: an overall 5.1% decrease in total passenger traffic compared to June 2025. This signals a complex, fragmented recovery that has some airports soaring while others are experiencing significant contractions.

Let’s not oversimplify it, though. The data is a mixed bag, and the devil is very much in the details. While the overall numbers are down, Guadalajara airport—a key economic hub rather than a pure tourist destination—actually reported a robust 6.0% increase in total passenger traffic.

This suggests that business travel, domestic connectivity, or perhaps new industrial investment might be insulating certain urban centers from broader tourism slowdowns.

June 2026 Passenger Traffic: The Peaks and Valleys

AirportTotal Passenger Change (June 2026 vs. June 2025)International Passenger Change
Guadalajara+6.0%+11.5%
Montego Bay (Jamaica)-23.4%-23.4%
Puerto Vallarta-18.7%-33.4%
Los Cabos-9.7%-14.2%
Tijuana-4.6%-6.8%
Morelia+17.5%+27.7%
La Paz+3.3%+22.4%

The big red flags are waving over the traditional tourist hotbeds. Puerto Vallarta saw a staggering 18.7% decrease in total passengers, with international traffic plunging by 33.4%.

Similarly, Los Cabos was down 9.7% overall, and Montego Bay, Jamaica, experienced a brutal 23.4% drop in total passengers.

This suggests that while some regions are thriving, others are feeling the pinch of shifting travel preferences, economic headwinds, or potentially increased competition from other destinations.

The silver lining, perhaps, comes in the form of strategic new routes. GAP continues to expand its network, with a flurry of new connections—many facilitated by Volaris—linking smaller cities like Aguascalientes and Guanajuato to key domestic hubs and even some international destinations like Detroit and Salt Lake City (via Guadalajara).

Montego Bay even snagged a new route to Medellin via Wingo, which, while not enough to offset the overall decline, is a sign of continued investment in connectivity.

What could be driving this uneven performance? Factors could include a softening global economy, increased competition from other destinations (as seen in the earlier Trip.com report on “coolcations”), or simply a normalization after an unsustainable post-COVID surge.

The overall load factors for GAP airports only slightly dipped from 82.2% to 82.0% in June 2026, even though available seats decreased by 4.9%. This hints at airlines adjusting capacity in response to demand, rather than a catastrophic collapse in bookings.

For investors, these preliminary figures for GAP (which trades on the NYSE under “PAC” and the BMV under “GAP”) will warrant close scrutiny. The divergence between business hubs and tourist mainstays suggests a need for targeted strategies rather than a blanket approach.

While the long-term outlook for Mexico and Caribbean tourism remains strong, June 2026’s numbers are a stark reminder that even the most beautiful destinations aren’t immune to shifts in global travel patterns.
