Weathernews Inc. Launches “SeaNavigator for Master,” an AI-Powered Chat Platform for Captains’ Operational Decisions

Chiba, Japan, January 27, 2026 – The isolation of ship captains making critical operational decisions at sea is rapidly becoming a relic of the past.

Weathernews Inc., a global leader in marine weather services, today launched “SeaNavigator for Master,” a next-generation, world-first support platform that uses AI-powered chat to assist captains in real-time.

Enabled by recent advances in maritime communications, this service aims to resolve the long-standing issue of information disparity between sea and shore. But can an AI chatbot truly provide the nuanced advice traditionally offered by human experts?

At the core of “SeaNavigator for Master” is the world’s first commercial conversational AI Agent specifically designed for ship captains. This revolutionary feature allows captains to ask AI for information directly relevant to voyage planning, such as weather risks along routes and at ports, as well as fuel consumption and speed forecasts, “just as if they were speaking with a Weathernews expert.”

This interactive dialogue experience marks a significant leap from conventional, often delayed, communications like email and satellite phone.

For nearly 40 years, Weathernews has provided essential marine weather services. Historically, captains at sea were limited to receiving information a few times a day via email, while shore-based managers had access to real-time, detailed data.

Recent substantial improvements in maritime network infrastructure have finally created the technical foundation for securely handling data at a level comparable to shore.

In response, Weathernews has renewed its onboard systems for the first time since 2012, prioritizing the needs of ship captains.

The “SeaNavigator for Master” platform delivers a wealth of capabilities:

  • AI Agent Dialogue: Captains can ask questions like, “Summarize the weather risks along the planned route,” or, “Tell me the wind speed and wave height forecast for the Port of Osaka in 48 hours,” receiving instant, chat-based responses referencing Weathernews’s extensive marine and operational data.
  • Timely High-Resolution Forecasts: Vessels can now access high-resolution marine data for all sea areas directly onboard, overlaid on nautical chart-style displays, including wind direction and speed, wave height and period, currents, and tropical cyclone track forecasts.
  • Voyage Route Simulation: Captains can independently search for optimal voyage routes onboard, based on wave height and historical routing track records. The system calculates routes, proposes multiple options ranked by weather-related risk, and refines them based on severe weather threats and ship report data. Simulations can even be performed from the vessel’s current location.
  • Chat-Based Voyage Plan Approval: The entire workflow, from route selection to approval, can now be conducted via chat between captains at sea and shore-based operations managers, dramatically accelerating decision-making by allowing both parties to view the same screen in real-time.

The service also includes the NAR (Navigation Assessment & Routing) grounding prevention support feature, previously exclusive to shore-based managers. This alerts users to grounding risks in shallow or congested waters, allowing both ship and shore personnel to review plans with shared data, accounting for operational factors beyond weather.

Early adopter shipping companies in Europe, Japan, and Asia have already praised the system as a tool driving digital transformation. One user commented on the “significant operational benefits” from improved onboard network environments and real-time discussions.

Weathernews is positioning AI technology as a powerful partner that enhances captains’ experience and expertise, aligning with its mission to “Saving the lives of sailors. Saving the future of our planet too” and promoting environmental digital transformation. This is a clear step towards a safer, more efficient, and hyper-connected future for maritime operations.
