Microsoft Adds Key AI Citation Analytics to Bing Webmaster Tools

Microsoft rolls out four new preview features—Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare—to track how generative AI uses your content

Redmond, WA, June 23, 2026 — Traditional search engine optimization is currently experiencing a slow, painful death. Let’s not sugarcoat it. The era of the “blue link” traffic firehose is winding down as generative AI engines like Microsoft Copilot scrape web content, synthesize it, and deliver answers directly to users without them ever needing to click through to a website. It is an existential crisis for publishers.

To throw webmasters a lifeline—or perhaps just a highly detailed map of their own demise—Microsoft is expanding its recently launched AI Performance Report within Bing Webmaster Tools with four powerful new analytical capabilities in preview.

The update, which is rolling out to users right now, is essentially the first real attempt by a major search engine to build a standardized analytics suite for the age of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO). Earlier this year, Microsoft gave webmasters a basic look at how often their sites were cited in Copilot.

This new preview update turns that basic tracker into a fully-fledged diagnostic dashboard, adding Intents, Topics, Citation Share, and Compare capabilities.

It’s a rare peek behind the curtain of how modern LLMs index, organize, and attribute real-world data.

The New GEO Metrics: Under the Hood

To survive in the new search landscape, digital marketers need to stop optimizing for keywords and start optimizing for model retrieval.

FeatureWhat It TracksWhy It’s Crucial for GEO
IntentsClassifies queries (Informational, Commercial, Local, etc.)Helps content creators write for the exact phase of the user’s buying journey.
TopicsGroups queries into semantic thematic clusters (e.g., Solar Energy)Moves tracking away from rigid keywords to how AI systems conceptually map data.
Citation SharePercentage of cited sources your site owns for a queryThe new version of “Organic Market Share” in a zero-click world.
CompareOverlays historical citation time periods (e.g., MoM trends)Lets SEOs actually measure the impact of content refreshes on LLM retrieval.

The most crucial feature of this roll-out is easily “Citation Share.” In the old days of SEO, you tracked your ranking (position 1 through 10) on a search results page.

In the AI era, that concept is completely meaningless. What matters now is whether the model cites you as a source in its conversational output.

The new Citation Share metric shows exactly what percentage of the total citation space your site holds for a given grounding query. It is a zero-sum game: if a user asks Copilot about the best credit cards, and Copilot cites five articles, you want to know if you own 20% or 80% of that real estate. It’s the new battleground for digital visibility.

The other features address the structural reality of how AI models think. The Topics feature, for instance, groups highly specific user queries into broader semantic clusters. This mimics how modern vector databases and RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation) systems cluster information.

Instead of obsessing over exact-match keywords, webmasters can see if they are authority figures on conceptual themes.

Meanwhile, Intents categorizes the underlying queries into classes like Commercial, Research, or Learn & Solve.

Let’s be highly, highly clear about what this represents: this is Microsoft trying to pacify a deeply angry publisher ecosystem.

As AI-led search threatens to decimate the ad-based business models of the web, tools like this are a peace offering.

It’s a way for Bing to say, “Look, we are still sending you some value, and here is how you can optimize to get more of it.”

Whether these metrics are enough to save publishers from a severe decline in traffic remains to be seen.

But in the meantime, if you’re not logging into the Bing Webmaster Tools dashboard to claim your slice of the AI citation pie, you’re essentially flying blind.
