Smartwater Drops First-Ever Sparkling Water Line

The Coca-Cola Company expands its iconic smartwater brand into carbonated, electrolyte-infused sparkling water, hitting Walmart first.

Must Try

ATLANTA — The bottled water aisle is undergoing a massive fizzy transformation. Plain still water is no longer cutting it for consumers who want an elevated beverage experience without artificial fruit flavors, heavy sweeteners, or sybaritic sugars.

The Coca-Cola Company is leaning hard into that trend, announcing that its flagship smartwater brand is branching out into carbonated beverages with the official introduction of smartwater sparkling.

Key Takeaways

  • First-Ever Carbonated Lineup: Smartwater sparkling brings the brand’s signature vapor-distilled water and electrolyte profile into a carbonated format for the first time.
  • Exclusive Walmart Launch: The unflavored sparkling water debuts nationwide across physical Walmart stores on October 12, 2026, followed by Walmart.com availability in late October.
  • Broad Rollout in 2027: Following the initial retail exclusivity window, the product will push into broader grocery and convenience store distribution channels throughout 2027.

Since launching back in 1996, smartwater built its entire market identity around clean design, vapor-distilled purity, and added electrolytes for a crisp taste. Until now, that identity lived entirely inside still-water bottles.

Dropping bubbles into the mix allows Coca-Cola to capture premium hydration occasions without straying into the crowded flavored sparkling water categories dominated by brands like LaCroix, Spindrift, and Liquid Death.

Ashley Summers, General Manager and Brand Lead for smartwater and vitaminwater in North America at The Coca‑Cola Company, explained the strategic portfolio expansion:

“smartwater sparkling is a natural extension for the brand because it allows us to broaden the role we can play in hydration. It gives us an opportunity to expand the smartwater portfolio in a way that feels relevant to how people are drinking water today, whether they’re reaching for hydration at home, at work or on the go.”

Formulation and Packaging Formats

Unlike many competitors that rely on fruit essences or natural flavor extracts, smartwater sparkling is entirely unflavored. The manufacturing process takes the brand’s standard vapor-distilled water, adds a precise blend of electrolytes for taste, and injects a balanced level of carbonation designed to provide sharp bubbles without destroying the clean finish.

To support different consumption habits at launch, Coca-Cola is rolling out two distinct multi-pack configurations:

  • 12-Ounce Cans: Packaged in convenient eight-packs, aimed at at-home fridge stocking and social gatherings.
  • 0.5-Liter PET Bottles: Packaged in six-packs, built for portability, workouts, and on-the-go desk hydration.

Retail Distribution Strategy

Securing a major retail launch partner is critical for new beverage lines, and Coca-Cola chose the biggest box in retail.

Smartwater sparkling will hit physical Walmart shelves nationwide starting October 12, 2026, with online ordering rolling out via Walmart.com later in the month.

Independent grocery stores and broader national retail partners will have to wait until 2027 to stock the product.

Whether unflavored carbonated water can carve out serious market share against legacy sparkling mineral waters remains to be seen. But backed by Coca-Cola’s massive distribution network and smartwater’s undeniable brand equity, this new fizz-filled line is guaranteed prime shelf real estate this fall.
