Sbarro Launches Spicy Calabrian Pepperoni and Sausage Pizza in Partnership with Hormel Foods

Must Try

New York, NY, July 8, 2026 — Let’s face it: nobody goes to Sbarro expecting a culinary revolution. You go because you’re at an airport terminal, a mall food court, or a highway rest stop, and a massive, greasy slice of New York-style pizza sitting under a heat lamp is the exact kind of salty comfort your soul is screaming for.

But the global slice-by-the-slice giant, which has been hand-stretching dough since 1956, is trying to shake off its reputation as a default option for tired shoppers.

In a new partnership with corporate food giant Hormel Foods, Sbarro has launched a nationwide, limited-time Spicy Calabrian Pepperoni and Sausage Pizza that runs through August 16, 2026.

The strategy here isn’t just about making your mouth burn. It is a highly calculated play on “swicy” (sweet-heat) and globally inspired flavor trends that are currently dominating high-end dining but have remained weirdly absent from quick-service restaurants. According to Datassential, menu penetration for Calabrian chili has shot up 59% over the past four years.

Yet, despite that massive spike, the ingredient features on less than 1% of QSR menus.

That is a massive amount of empty market space. Hormel is trying to bridge that gap by baking the spicy, fruity kick of Calabrian chilis directly into the pepperoni and sausage before they ever reach a kitchen. It’s high-tech meat, basically.

The thing is, is that the recipe wasn’t engineered in some corporate boardroom in New York. The Sbarro culinary team actually stumbled upon Hormel’s new meat innovation while wandering the floor at the International Pizza Expo in Las Vegas this past April.

Dwayne Adams, Sbarro’s VP of culinary innovation, apparently knew immediately that this was the hack they needed to introduce trendy, premium heat without overcomplicating their notoriously fast-paced kitchen operations. By partnering with Hormel, they get a pre-seasoned product that requires zero extra labor from employees who are already busy slinging dough.

Let’s talk specs. The pizza itself is built on Sbarro’s standard canvas: hand-stretched dough, vine-ripened San Marzano-style tomato sauce, and 100% whole milk mozzarella shredded in-house daily. But the toppings are doing all the heavy lifting.

If you’re a purist, you might roll your eyes at the thought of a corporate giant like Hormel industrializing a regional Italian delicacy.

But in a fast-casual landscape where labor is scarce and customers are increasingly demanding “elevated” dining options, this is how the game is played.

Sbarro operates in over 30 countries across casinos, airports, and universities—spaces where consistency is the absolute king.

If this limited run is successful, it could pave the way for a permanent shift in how national chains approach “premium” toppings.

It’s a bold move, but a necessary one. If Sbarro wants to keep its footing in an era where consumers are increasingly looking to independent, artisanal pizzerias, bringing complex, globally inspired spices to the food court is a smart play.

The Spicy Calabrian Pepperoni and Sausage Pizza is live now at participating locations. You can order your slice, or a whole giant 17-inch XL pie, directly at participating Sbarro locations nationwide and when ordering online at Sbarro.com from July 6 , while supplies last.

Go grab a slice before the heat wave ends on August 16.
