Kagi Kills Orion Browser for Linux and Windows

Kagi ends in-house development of its WebKit-based Orion browser on Linux and Windows to focus resources exclusively on Apple platforms.

PALO ALTO, Calif. — Building a non-Chromium web browser in an era dominated by Google is already hard. Trying to do it on a shoestring budget across macOS, iOS, Linux, and Windows with a team of five developers is practically impossible.

Kagi, the privacy-focused search engine company, is finally admitting defeat on its cross-platform ambitions, officially killing off internal development of its WebKit-based Orion browser for Linux and Windows.

Key Takeaways

  • Development Shutdown: Kagi is immediately halting internal work on Orion for Linux and cancelling the planned late-2026 Windows launch.
  • Open-Source Handoff: The complete source code for both the Linux and Windows builds will be open-sourced within 30 days as Kagi searches for community maintainers or foundations to steward the projects.
  • Doubling Down on Apple: All engineering resources are being pulled back to focus strictly on optimizing Orion for macOS and iOS environments.

The core vision behind Orion was bold: build a lightweight, privacy-respecting browser using Apple’s WebKit engine that could run Chrome and Firefox extensions simultaneously, completely decoupled from Google’s Chromium codebase.

When Kagi announced a native Linux build, open-source enthusiasts were thrilled at the prospect of having a modern WebKit alternative to Firefox and Brave.

However, running WebKit reliably outside of Apple’s heavily integrated ecosystem requires immense engineering lift. Without venture capital backing or a massive army of open-source contributors, Kagi’s small, user-funded team found itself spread dangerously thin across four distinct operating systems.

The Kagi engineering team laid out the brutal math in a candid blog post:

Building a cross-platform browser is something usually done by companies backed by venture capital or by large open-source communities. Kagi is neither. One thing we hear often from members is that they want us focused. They’re right. Rather than spread a small team across three platforms, we’re putting our energy where we can do our best work and opening the rest to people who want to take it further.

For current users, the practical impact is immediate. The existing Orion Linux Beta will continue to run, but Kagi will officially cut off software updates, security patches, and bug fixes after October 2, 2026.

The company explicitly advised users against relying on the build as their primary daily browser moving forward.

Meanwhile, the anticipated late-2026 Windows release is canceled outright.

Instead, the raw Windows codebase will be released publicly alongside the Linux code over the next month, allowing interested organizations, foundations, or independent developers to pick up the pieces.

Retreating back into the safety of Apple’s walled garden makes tactical sense for Kagi.

WebKit runs natively on macOS and iOS, drastically reducing the maintenance overhead required to keep the browser fast and stable.

The engineering time saved from dropping Linux and Windows support will go directly into improving extension compatibility, memory efficiency, and sync speeds for Apple users.

Still, this retreat serves as a sobering reminder of just how fragile web engine diversity really is.

With Microsoft Edge, Brave, Opera, Vivaldi, and Chrome all relying on Google’s Blink/Chromium engine, independent browser choices outside of Apple’s orbit continue to shrink to basically just Firefox.
