Miami, July 17, 2026 — Inter Miami is shuffling the deck again, and frankly, this latest move is a textbook example of MLS salary cap gymnastics at its finest.
The club announced Friday that they are sending 22-year-old defender Tomás Avilés on loan to Chilean Primera División outfit O’Higgins FC.
The deal keeps him in Chile for the remainder of the 2026 season, pending the delivery of his International Transfer Certificate (ITC).
But the real kicker here isn’t just the temporary change of scenery for the young Argentine. It is the roster mechanics.
By sending Avilés down south, Inter Miami successfully ensures he will not occupy a U22 Initiative Spot on their books while on loan. For those of us who do not spend our free time reading the Byzantine and frankly exhausting MLS roster rulebooks, that is a massive victory.
It frees up flexibility. Crucial, roster-building flexibility for a front office that loves to hunt for big names.

Let’s look at the kid’s actual track record since he arrived in Fort Lauderdale back in August 2023. He was not just a benchwarmer who got lucky. Avilés actually racked up a massive 87 appearances across all competitions. That is a hell of a lot of mileage for a player who is still only 22.
Along the way, he even chipped in four goals and two assists—not bad at all for a guy whose primary job is keeping the ball away from his own net.
More importantly, Avilés was right in the thick of Miami’s golden era. He was a key, very crucial cog in the squads that clinched the inaugural Leagues Cup title in 2023, the record-breaking 74-point Supporters’ Shield campaign in 2024, and the historic 2025 MLS Cup. He has played under immense pressure next to some of the greatest to ever play the game.
So why let him go now?
It seems to me that Miami is preparing for another incoming splash. You do not just loan out a proven, title-winning young defender in the middle of a campaign unless you have a concrete plan to use that newly opened U22 spot immediately.
O’Higgins FC gets a highly experienced, battle-tested young defender, and Miami gets the spreadsheet relief they desperately need to make their next move. It’s a win-win, but MLS fans know the other shoe is about to drop.
