Charlotte, N.C. — Let’s be completely honest for a second. There is a very specific type of dread that comes with biting into a grab-and-go vending machine meal and realizing something is fundamentally wrong with it. But if you bought a vegetarian burrito recently in the Southeast, that dread might actually be a very, very real health risk.

Fresh & Ready Foods LLC has officially issued a voluntary recall for a couple of its spicy breakfast burritos because, well, they accidentally stuffed them with actual meat.
According to the recall announcement, the mix-up was uncovered after at least two customer complaints flagged the presence of real sausage in products that were explicitly labeled as vegetarian.
Aside from the obvious frustration for anyone avoiding meat, this created a complete nightmare for people with severe food allergies.
The pork sausage contains soy—a major allergen—which, of course, was never declared on the vegetarian packaging. If you have a severe soy allergy, eating one of these could land you in the hospital.

The recall affects products distributed across grab-and-go micro-markets and vending machines in eight states: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.
Here are the specific, messy details you need to check if you have one of these sitting in your office breakroom fridge:
- Sprig & Sprout Spicy Breakfast Burrito: 8.3 oz (234g), UPC Code 1 00001 00029 7, with a “Fresh Thru” date of 07/20/26.
- Fresh and Ready Spicy Breakfast Burrito: 8.2 oz (232g), UPC Code 1 00001 00029 7, with a “Fresh Thru” date of 07/20/26.
- Production Window: Manufactured at the Charlotte, North Carolina facility between July 9 and July 12, 2026.
Now, at the end of the day, when you look at the dates, the “Fresh Thru” date of July 20 has technically passed. But let’s not kid ourselves—plenty of people throw these kinds of burritos into their home freezers or leave them sitting in the back of the workplace fridge for “emergency” lunches weeks later.
If you happen to have one, the FDA and the manufacturer are urging you to throw it in the trash immediately. Do not risk eating it, even if you aren’t allergic to soy and just want a free pass on some accidental sausage.
Fortunately, no illnesses or severe allergic reactions have been reported so far. If you bought one of these and want your money back, you can get a full refund by emailing RecallConcern@HotLineGlobal.com or calling their hotline at 1-855-424-8390, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET.
It’s a good reminder that even in highly regulated facilities, a simple labeling oversight can instantly turn a healthy vegetarian lunch into a public health hazard.
