Santiago, Chile — Let’s face it. Teaching is an exhausting, underpaid, uphill climb. Yet, once a year, society pretends to give these professionals their flowers. But maybe, just maybe, this particular initiative actually matters.
The search is officially on for Chile’s most boundary-pushing educators as applications open for the 2026 Global Teacher Prize Chile.
Casually known in policy circles as the “Nobel Prize for Teaching,” this award isn’t just about handing out a shiny trophy. It’s a direct attempt to shake us out of our collective apathy regarding the people who actually build our societies.
The nomination window opened on May 18 and slams shut on June 21, 2026. That is not a lot of time. Anyone can nominate a teacher—a parent, a former student, a colleague—or teachers can simply nominate themselves. (And let’s be honest, self-promotion is highly encouraged here; humility won’t pay the bills or get your unique curriculum noticed).
The entire selection process wraps up on November 4, 2026, with a high-profile ceremony at the Municipal Theatre of Las Condes.

Supported heavily by the UNESCO Regional Office in Santiago, the prize has spent over a decade trying to reframe how Chile views its teaching class.
Esther Kuisch Laroche, UNESCO’s Santiago director, pointed out that recognizing teachers is basically recognizing the people who make social transformation possible.
Verónica Cabezas over at Elige Educar—the local public-private group organizing the national edition based on the global Varkey Foundation model—echoed this sentiment. She noted that so much of what happens in classrooms goes completely unnoticed. She wants the whole country to stop, look, and actually say thank you.
This year’s iteration mirrors the 2025 edition by breaking the award down into three specific buckets. Why? Because comparing a kindergarten teacher to a high school calculus wizard is like comparing apples to microchips. It makes no sense. Here is how the categories shake out:
| Category | Target Educators | Key Partners & Focus |
|---|---|---|
| Early Childhood Education | Nursery, kindergarten, and language school teachers. | Promoted with Fundación Educacional Oportunidad and Fundación YA. |
| Music Education | Teachers in schools, youth orchestras, and community choirs. | Focuses on melody and performance as social tools. |
| Holistic Education | Primary, secondary, hospital, and adult school teachers. | Covers core subjects like Math, Language, History, and Special Ed. |
So, how do you get someone in the running? It is incredibly simple.
You head over to the official portal at www.gtpchile.cl and fill out a quick form.
If a teacher made a massive, life-altering impact on your life, or your kid’s life, go nominate them. Seriously. Do it now. It takes five minutes, and frankly, they’ve earned it.
