Tripwire Interactive Announces Killing Floor 3 Free Weekend Across All Platforms

Tripwire Interactive drops Season 4 - Operation: Shadow Hunter alongside a 50% discount and free-to-play event

Let’s be completely honest for a second: the co-op horde shooter market is incredibly crowded right now. It feels like every other week some studio is trying to sell us on a new “live-service extraction shooter” or a generic zombie survival game that gets abandoned in six months.

But if there is one franchise that has earned its stripes in the blood-slicked trenches of cooperative carnage, it is Tripwire Interactive’s flagship gory baby. And right now, they are practically begging you to jump back in.

Starting July 23 and running through July 27, 2026, Tripwire Interactive is hosting a massive Free Weekend for Killing Floor 3 across all major platforms, including PC (via Steam and EGS), PS5™ and XBOX Series X|S.

If you actually end up liking what you play, they are slashing the price by 50% to get you to commit.

It is a smart, aggressive move—one designed to inject a massive wave of fresh meat into the servers just as they drop their biggest update yet: Season 4, dubbed Operation: Shadow Hunter.

So, what is actually new in this update? To start, the update introduces the highly anticipated Gunslinger perk. If you played the previous games, you know exactly what this means: dual-wielding high-powered pistols, moving like a caffeinated action movie star, and popping Zed heads in slow-motion Zed-time.

This time around, the Gunslinger gets a high-tech armor upgrade to fit the game’s gritty 2091 corporate-dystopia aesthetic. You’ll be testing these new dual pistols on a brand-new map set on a frozen, mire-infested oil rig out in the middle of the Nordic North Sea.

The update also throws a wrench in your team’s survival plans by introducing a new boss, the elusive Dr. Moorcroft. But what I find most interesting—and frankly, what the game desperately needed—is the addition of a new “tweener” difficulty level. It sits snugly between “Hard” and the absolute nightmare that is “Hell-on-Earth.”

If you’ve ever played a Killing Floor game, you know that the jump between those two difficulties felt less like a step up and more like jumping off a cliff into a meat grinder. This new difficulty should make the 6-player co-op grind a bit more manageable for squads that aren’t esports pros.

At its core, the game still relies on its signature selling points. The “M.E.A.T.” system (massacres, extractions, and tactical stuff… or more accurately, just an excuse to write highly realistic dismemberment code) is back and messier than ever. The blood stays on the floor, the limbs fly in realistic trajectories, and the guns feel incredibly punchy.

Whether you are tactical with a katana or prefer the chaotic burn of a flamethrower, the combat loop remains incredibly satisfying.

You can read up on the full patch details directly via Tripwire’s official portal.

If you have some buddies looking for something mindless and brutal to play this weekend, you really don’t have an excuse to skip this. It costs literally nothing to download and try for the next four days.

Just remember to bring someone who knows how to play Medic, because Dr. Moorcroft does not look like he is handing out friendly check-ups on that oil rig.
