[London, June 23, 2026] — If you’ve spent any time in the self-custody space, you know the “on-ramp crawl.” You decide to buy the dip, tap the buy button in your wallet app, and are immediately punted to an external browser. There, you’re forced to manually type in credit card numbers like it’s 2005, only to pray that the redirect back to the app doesn’t break.
It’s a clunky, high-friction process that causes massive “drop-off” rates. Today, that friction took a significant hit. Global payments infrastructure leader Mercuryo announced the integration of native Apple Pay into Tangem, the Swiss-based hardware wallet company known for its NFC-enabled cards and rings.
The update allows Tangem users to complete crypto purchases using the credit or debit cards already stored in their Apple Wallet. Crucially, the “native” part of this integration means the transaction happens entirely within the Tangem interface. There are no external redirects.
You confirm with Face ID or Touch ID, and the assets are sent directly to your self-custody address. It’s the kind of “one-tap” convenience that users have come to expect from Starbucks or Amazon, but which has remained frustratingly elusive in the world of cold storage.

The Friction Problem: Why Native Matters
According to the announcement, on-ramp friction is one of the primary killers of crypto adoption. The redirect model—where a user is sent to a third-party payment page—is a conversion nightmare. It feels less secure, it’s slower, and it disrupts the user journey.
By embedding Mercuryo’s native Apple Pay sheet directly into the app, Tangem is effectively closing the “UX gap” that has historically made custodial exchanges (like Coinbase or Binance) more attractive to casual users than true self-custody.
Tangem vs. The Market
| Feature | Legacy On-Ramp Model | Tangem + Mercuryo (Native) |
|---|---|---|
| User Interface | External Browser Redirect | Native In-App Payment Sheet |
| Authentication | Manual Card Entry / 3DS | Face ID / Touch ID |
| Transaction Speed | 2-5 Minutes | Under 30 Seconds |
| Custody Type | Typically Custodial First | Direct to Self-Custody |
To be fair, Tangem has always been a bit of an outlier in the hardware space. Founded in 2017, the company moved away from the bulky, USB-style sticks of its competitors, opting instead for a form factor that mimics a credit card or a piece of jewelry (their NFC rings).
This latest move into biometric-enabled purchasing reinforces their “simplicity-first” ethos. While Tangem offers traditional seed phrase backups, they are perhaps best known for their seedless security model, which utilizes the hardware itself as the primary key.

Mercuryo’s role here is the “plumbing” that makes this work. As a partner to heavyweights like Trust Wallet, Ledger, and MetaMask, Mercuryo is essentially building the connective tissue between traditional finance (TradFi) and the decentralized ecosystem.
This integration with Tangem is a clear signal of where the industry is heading: total abstraction of the underlying complexity. Most users don’t care about the intricacies of on-chain settlement; they just want to buy their Bitcoin as easily as they buy a latte.
Currently, the native Apple Pay feature is live for Tangem users on iOS. Android users aren’t left in the cold—they can still use Mercuryo’s standard card and bank transfer flows—but they won’t get that specific one-tap biometric experience just yet.
As the line between Web2 ease-of-use and Web3 security continues to blur, this partnership sets a new baseline for what a hardware wallet experience should look like in 2026.
