PILSEN, Czech Republic — Let’s be real for a second: modern physical game releases have become a total joke. Half the time, you drive to a retail store, hand over your hard-earned money, and open up a plastic case only to find a cheap paper slip with a digital download code printed on it.
It is frustrating, lazy, and defeats the whole purpose of physical preservation. Fortunately, Czech publisher Nejcraft is showing the big gaming giants how it should actually be done.
The company, alongside a tiny three-person development team at Quite OK Games, has officially launched the physical standard and Collector’s editions of their acclaimed Himalayan city-builder, Laysara: Summit Kingdom.
Available right now on retail shelves across North America, Europe, and Asia, the game comes fully printed on physical media for both the PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch.
No massive day-one download codes required to bypass an empty cartridge. Even better? If you happen to be playing the Switch version on Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, the cartridge is built to automatically scale up to Full HD handheld resolution with upgraded textures right out of the gate.
For those unfamiliar with the digital version that launched earlier this year, Laysara: Summit Kingdom is not your average city-builder. You can forget about laying down flat suburban grids or managing commuter traffic.
Instead, the game tasks players with managing vertical, multi-layered societies on the sheer cliffs of the Himalayas.
You have to deal with complex logistical pipelines, manage a rigid three-caste society, and pray that a sudden, dynamic avalanche does not wipe out your entire mountain transport network. The final goal? Erecting a massive, sacred Summit Temple at the very peak of the mountain.
The absolute star of this physical release is the limited Collector’s Edition. Nejcraft went all-out here, creating a physical package that actually respects the player’s wallet.
The highlight is a custom, goofy 7cm Yak figure—modeled after the beloved, clumsy beasts of burden that transport goods across your cliffs in-game.
Here is what is packed inside the premium collector’s box:
- An exclusive 7 cm Yak Figure
- A premium, heavyweight Collector’s Box
- The complete physical game on disc or cartridge
- The official original soundtrack CD
- A gorgeous 54-page physical Design Book showing early development concepts
- A custom Sticker Sheet to customize your real-life gear
Additionally, the developers have teased a tiny, hidden artistic detail nestled somewhere within the box artwork itself for physical collectors to discover on their own.
If you want to grab a copy before the limited print run vanishes, you can order directly through the Nejcraft Store or secure one from various regional retail partners:
- North America: Available via Videogamesplus.
- United Kingdom & Europe: Stocked across regional Amazon portals (UK, FR, NL, IT, PT, DE, ES) as well as specialized local outlets like FNAC, GAME, and Alza.
- Asia: Distributed widely via international import specialist PlayAsia.
It is refreshing to see a small indie team and a hands-on publisher deliver a complete, highly-curated physical product at a time when major AAA publishers are actively trying to kill off physical storefronts altogether. If you are tired of sterile digital libraries, this mountain-scaling puzzle box is well worth the shelf space.
