Burbank, March 11, 2026 – Clear your Sunday nights, set your DVRs, and maybe mentally prepare for existential dread mixed with outrageous humor: Rick and Morty is officially portal-jumping back into our lives!
Adult Swim just announced that the ninth season of its wildly popular (and Emmy-winning) series will premiere on Sunday, May 24, at 11:00 PM ET/PT.
Get ready, because they’re promising a season that’s “bigger, bolder, and more ambitious than ever.” You’ve heard that before, right? But with Rick and Morty, sometimes, just sometimes, they actually deliver.
Michael Ouweleen, president of Adult Swim, is practically gushing about it, declaring, “I know it’s my job to say that this show just keeps topping itself, but it also has the benefit of being true.”
He’s even calling it “scary what this show unit is doing season over season,” praising the “absurd amount of talent and brilliance” poured into these episodes. High praise, indeed.
He’s talking “great high-concept insanity” and “some of the best character writing ever done.” Bold claims, but if any animated show has proven it can continually push boundaries, it’s arguably this one.
And the official season description? It’s peak Rick and Morty meta-humor. “Rick and Morty is back, baby! Season Nine is all certified bangers. No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by real humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts. Please watch, or we’ll have neglected our families for nothing.”
That jab at “AI slop” is perfectly timed, isn’t it? It’s a reminder that even in a world increasingly fascinated by artificial intelligence, there’s still something uniquely grotesque and brilliant about human-made art.
A clip from Season 9 was even dropped on Adult Swim’s social channels on March 12, giving us our first real taste.
For those keeping score, Rick and Morty isn’t just a hit; it’s been a monster. It was the #1 comedy across all of cable for four seasons running (three, four, five, and six), and it’s bagged two Emmys for “Outstanding Animated Program.”
The voice cast – Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, Sarah Chalke, Chris Parnell, and Spencer Grammer – are all back, bringing those iconic characters to life.
And the show is still executive produced by the dynamic duo of Dan Harmon and Scott Marder, with Marder also serving as showrunner. That consistency behind the scenes is key, especially after some of the shake-ups a while back.

This isn’t just a US phenomenon, either. It’s a “global cultural juggernaut.” Season 9 will debut in over 170 countries, translated into a staggering 42 languages. Talk about universal appeal! If you’re in the US and can’t wait for the linear broadcast, new episodes will be available for purchase from digital retailers the day after they premiere. And for the streamers out there, Rick and Morty Season 9 will hit streaming services in the US starting August 31.
So, get ready for more nihilistic adventures, more bizarre sci-fi concepts, and probably more psychological trauma for the Smith family. Will it live up to the hype? Can it truly top itself yet again, avoiding any “organic slop” pitfalls? With Rick and Morty, the journey is always unpredictable, and that’s precisely why millions keep tuning in. Let the countdown to May 24th begin – and remember, nobody exists on purpose, nobody belongs anywhere, everybody’s gonna die. Come watch TV!
