World’s First Pokémon-Branded Airport to Open in Noto This July

NOTO, Japan, June 23, 2026 — If you’ve traveled through Japan, you’ve probably seen some intense regional branding. Hello Kitty shinkansen trains, local mascot-themed police boxes, and prefecture-specific snacks are par for the course.

But Ishikawa Prefecture is taking this to an entirely different altitude.

On July 7, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport will officially reopen as the Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport. It will be the only airport in the world to officially bear the Pokémon name, and honestly, the sheer scale of this takeover is kind of staggering.

This temporary airport redesign—slated to run through September 2029—is a collaboration between local government and the Pokémon With You Foundation, a disaster-relief initiative established specifically to bring some joy and tourism revenue back to disaster-hit communities.

Using pop culture as a tool for economic healing is a classic Japanese playbook move, but turning an actual, functioning regional airport into a Pokémon hub is a massive regional flex.

Terminal Upgrades: What to Expect

If you are planning to fly into Noto this summer, you are going to be greeted by pocket monsters at basically every operational checkpoint. The developers didn’t half-ass this.

Yes, you read that right—111 of them.

The designers literally mapped out every single Flying-type Pokémon discovered as of May 2026 (excluding Mega Evolutions and regional variants, because let’s not make the painters’ lives a total living hell) and integrated them into the second-floor architecture.

For fans who obsessive-compulsively track the games, there are also three exclusive short animated videos running on loops inside the terminal, including a localized short story featuring Dreepy.

But the Pokémon experience doesn’t actually stop at the baggage claim. The local transit network is getting fully integrated into the theme starting in mid-July. The Hokuriku Tetsudo Group is rolling out two fully wrapped Pokémon buses.

One will handle the daily round trip connecting Kanazawa Station, the airport, and Wajima City.

The other is a brand-new “Noto Circular Bus” that is basically a tour guide for other regional Pokémon landmarks, including the newly opened Wakura Pokémon Footbath at Wakura Onsen and the Nymphia (Sylveon) monument in Suzu City.

It’s easy to look at corporate partnerships like this and feel a little cynical about the commercialization of disaster recovery. But for the people of Hokuriku, who have spent the last two years quietly rebuilding their lives, their infrastructure, and their tourism economy, this is a massive win. It gives global travelers a highly compelling, joyful reason to put Noto back on their itineraries.
