United Oil & Gas Shares Jump 23% Following Positive Jamaica Survey Results

The Search for Caribbean Crude: A Critical Milestone for United Oil & Gas

The markets have responded with a surge of enthusiasm for United Oil & Gas (AIM: UOG), with the company’s share price climbing a staggering 23% following the latest update from its Walton-Morant Licence offshore Jamaica.

For a company focused on high-impact exploration, these results are more than just data—they are a crucial validation of a potential multi-billion-barrel prize.

United Oil & Gas is an independent oil and gas company that balances high-impact exploration in Jamaica with a development asset in the UK.

Led by CEO Brian Larkin, the company focuses on portfolio optimization and strategic acquisitions to drive long-term growth.

Their work in Jamaica is particularly significant, as the licence contains an estimated 7 billion barrels of prospective resources, making it a “world-class” play that could rewrite the company’s future.

The excitement stems from the analysis of 42 piston core samples taken from the seabed. The survey identified the presence of butane and pentane hydrocarbons.

What is a piston core sample? Piston core samples are long, relatively undisturbed cylindrical sediment cores collected from the seafloor using a specialized gravity-driven, piston-activated corer.

These devices use an internal piston to create suction, enabling recovery of deeper (up to 27+ meters) and less compressed sediment layers compared to standard gravity corers. [1, 2, 3]

In the world of petroleum exploration, these aren’t just random chemicals; they are “higher-order” hydrocarbons.

Because they aren’t typically associated with biogenic gas, their presence suggests a thermogenic origin—in layman’s terms, there is a very high probability of a mature, active petroleum system deep beneath the seabed.

  • The Evidence Mounts: This isn’t a shot in the dark. The company has combined satellite slick anomalies, previous well data, and onshore seeps to build a compelling case for an active system.
  • The Next Step: United Oil & Gas is now integrating this geochemical data into its geological models. The goal? To de-risk the licence enough to advance toward a final drilling decision and, crucially, to lure potential partners into a farm-out agreement.

For investors, the 23% jump isn’t just about the discovery of a few hydrocarbons; it’s about the de-risking of a massive asset. Drilling offshore is an incredibly expensive, high-stakes game.

By providing evidence of an active system, United Oil & Gas has made the Walton-Morant licence a much more attractive proposition for the industry majors they are currently courting.

As Brian Larkin noted, this is a “significant milestone.” While 7 billion barrels of prospective resources remains an estimate until a drill bit actually confirms a reservoir, the geochemical breadcrumbs are pointing in the right direction.

The market clearly likes the scent of oil, but the real test—the farm-out deal and the eventual spudding of a well—is still on the horizon.
