Montreal, Canada – Valnet, a digital publishing and media investment company, has acquired Polygon, a premium gaming publication, from Vox Media.
The announcement highlights that Polygon will join Valnet’s gaming portfolio, known as The Valnet Gaming Group, which collectively reaches over 1.2 billion users annually.
The value of the acquisition is unknown and has not been disclosed.
Polygon will be integrated into Valnet’s Gaming Portfolio, joining publications like Game Rant, TheGamer, Fextralife, OpenCritic, DualShockers, and HardcoreGamer.
This acquisition follows Valnet’s recent purchase of FextraLife.
This news follows the recent layoffs of Polygon staff, as reported by Kotaku. Additionally, it’s noteworthy that this news comes shortly after lawsuits filed by former MovieWeb writer Daniel Quintiliano, which argue that the working conditions at Valnet do not meet the criteria for independent contractor status under California law. Valnet has also gained a reputation for its poor working conditions, often described as a sweatshop, paying only $40 per article while producing a large volume of content daily to attract SEO traffic.
TheWrap features an article discussing the background of Valnet’s founders and their relationship with writers, contributors and staff.
“It is with immense pride and gratitude that we welcome Polygon into our growing family of world-class gaming brands,” said Hassan Youssef, CEO & Founder at Valnet. “The addition of Polygon not only strengthens our editorial muscle but also amplifies our ability to deliver unmatched value to both audiences and advertisers.”
Founded in 2012, Polygon is known for its in-depth and analytical approach to video game journalism, covering the cultural, social, and artistic aspects of gaming, as well as broader pop culture and entertainment topics.
“We’re proud to have built Polygon into the gaming authority for both experts and casual fans alike,” said Jim Bankoff, Vox Media’s co-founder, chair, and CEO. “This transaction will enable us to focus our energies and investment resources in other priority areas of growth across our portfolio.”
Polygon attracts a US monthly reach of over 6 million (Comscore), with more than 3.5 million social media followers.
